How to Get Amazon Reviews for Your Ecommerce Store

Why do you need to have amazon reviews?

Modern mouth has become the modern way of advertising, especially for eCommerce shops. It’s a powerful way to affect how people perceive your business. And a study that was done last years showed that online reviews was trusted by 79% of consumers and sees it as personal recommendations. About 85% of consumers even stated that they read reviews online to decide for their local business. And 73% of the consumers say that they trust businesses more from positive customer reviews.

What can Amazon reviews do for your business?

They have different type of purposes like:

  • Encourage buyers to make a purchase.
  • Encourage buyers to pick your products over other alternatives available.
  • Make your customers assured that your products have good quality.
  • Acts as a word of mouth recommendation.

The human hardwire and why products reviews actually matter?

It’s already proven by studies that word of mouth is not just a powerful marketing tool but the most powerful one available as of today. Even with how high-tech everything has become, with the online ability and all when a friend talks about an amazing product, we’re all ears. Our lives have changed a lot compared to our Neanderthal ancestors but we are programmed to get encourage to make choices based on what actions people around us take. And with the herd mentality, the numbers have a great effect. When a lot of people are talking about something they have to get their hands on, we tend to feel the same.

Personally, I sometimes fall as a victim to the herd mentality. Especially when the deals are really good. And I’m sure you also have your fair share of silly purchases because a lot of people have been talking about how great a deal was.

Sometimes it’s actually a great purchase but sometimes we’re just being sheepish because we’re programmed to be like that.

Social proof is another powerful thing here, the more of it that you have, the more potent it’s effect would be. For instance, if a product was reviewed 10 times and stared 4.5 people would still look for something better. But if a product was reviewed 200 times and was rated 4 stars, that’ll definitely sell more than the one stared 4.5. Your product would look better when there are more reviews, it becomes more convincing and on Amazon, it boosts your visibility and makes you easier to search.

How can you ask for it?

Make buyers open your emails

Follow-up emails are a very useful tool to get your customers to review what they purchased. There are a lot of different approaches you could take like ensuring they got their items in good condition, or if they are enjoying the product they purchased. But the question here is how can you make them actually open your email? Studies and researches showed that a good way to make people open or put in effort into something is by offering something. So you can make your consumers open your emails by offering some information that your customers care about. For example, they just purchased a yoga matt, you can include something related to yoga to get them interested. You have limitless opinions to offer depending on your products, just make sure you get creative.

There are also other ways you can engage them like by asking them to reply to your emails with what they think about your products. Sending them some tips regarding what they purchased, if they purchased something for cooking, you can add in some recipes. Or another way to catch their eye is by offering a discount on their next purchase when they send their thoughts on your products. Just make sure to get as creative as you can be with your subject line because that is your lifeline. When they get your email they get to see your subject line, and that’s when they’ll decide to open your email, let it be, or delete it.

Examples for subject lines:

  • Everyone is excited to hear from you ( ask them to give some tips)
  • Thank you for being a loyal customer, here’s a gift for you! (include your gift)
  • Your opinion highly matter-Vote now ( ask them to vote on your content)

When your products are those you’ll need to assemble or electronics, you can use follow-up emails as a great way to give instructions for installing, and even videos that show how to use it.

Create a workflow to automate asking for reviews

In your current marketing automation or email system you can add a step for review collection. All you need is one email in your customer’s journey to collect the reviews that you need. A very useful feature of marketing automation is workflows, it allows you to pick emails to send depending on actions that have been made like links clicked, purchases done, the time on your list, and others more. If you’re aiming to be able to collect more reviews, after a week after you’ve delivered their norder you could send a review email. If you want to try to remind them you can send a reminder but make sure that it doesn’t happen after they’ve given a review. That’ll need another workflow which will only send the second email if the certain page on your site haven’t been viewed.

Your email could go like this:

“We are trying to make our business even more better, if you have a moment we would highly appreciate you leaving your honest feedback in our review form. To leave a review kindly click here (insert the link to your review form).

As you can see in the message above, we aren’t asking them for a type of review, we encourage them to honestly tell us what they think of their journey. That’s a safe way to ask for a review while still following the rules of Amazon.

5 Tips to get amazon reviews

1. Make sure your consumer experience is great. When you browse through negative reviews you would see that majority of it is about being misled about what they bought. So make sure that you’re honest about the product that you’re selling and make your information about it as precise and accurate as possible. Don’t give false expectations because that would scare your customer away.

2. Make use of follow-up emails after a purchase is made to ask for a feedback. Amazon would ask for feedbacks after a purchase but it’s an email with nothing special in it. So instead, send something more personalized with a review request. Make sure to send them a while after they’ve received their order to make sure that their experience is still fresh and there’s still excitement about your product. Make it as easy as possible for them to send a feedback.

3.   Let’s say your customers already liked and followed you on social medias, and hey even subscribed for your newsletter, why don’t you go ahead and ask them for a review? Chances are they’ve already done a purchase with you, so they can give you a real positive amazon review.

4.     There are users who have reviewed products that are similar to yours. Simply click on “Customer reviews” link then sort it by newest reviews then click on the name of the reviewer, afterward check for their details. If it’s connected to their profile, then lucky you! Go ahead and send them an email.

5.      Ask for reviews from top Amazon reviewers. Yes, amazon has a list of their top reviewers and in there are those who are insightful and objective critiques. Their name on the reviews would have “Top Ten Reviewer” or “ Hall of Fame Reviewer” that would make your review more valuable.

Amazon Terms of Service state:

Reviews are important in Amazon, there’s a forum provided to hold feedbacks relevant to the product, services, and the experience the customer had whether it be negative or positive. Compensation or even discounted products are not allowed to be given in exchange for a review. You aren’t allowed to solicit for reviews that are only positive or offer compensation for it. You aren’t allowed to ask buyers to remove their reviews or edit it.

What should you NOT do:

Most of the sellers aren’t directly asking customers to only give positive reviews, but when you say “ Please leave a review if you are enjoying our product” the words used could actually look like you’re only inviting positive reviews, If your follow up email looks nothing like this then you should be proud.

“If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact our customer service. And if our product is more than what you expected please leave us your honest feedback here [insert review link].”

It doesn’t really look bad right? But it wouldn’t be allowed on Amazon. The way it’s written makes it look like if you have a problem contact us but if you don’t then please give a review. You have to let them know that you are accepting reviews whether positive or negative. Maybe you’re a customer-focused seller and would want to address the concern your buyer might have, that is okay. But Amazon doesn’t look at it that way, they see it as if you’re trying to avoid a negative review. So make sure that you always make it clear that it’s not just positive reviews that are welcome.
